COMMUNITY BUILDING & SEL (Social Emotional Lesson with Mrs. Bird)
- Mrs. Bird comes into the classroom the 1st Thursday of the month to give a whole group lesson on a variety of relevant topics for our 1st graders. Some of the things she talks about are: Zones of Regulation (you can find them in our quiet area and YES the children actually use them), Compromise, How big is it? (a lesson in self awareness, or making a big deal about a little thing), Conflict resolution, and more.
READING/FUNDATIONS
- We spent the first month of school getting our letter formation and sound back in tip top shape. Ms. Deevy has also been meeting with children one on one to complete the benchmark assessment of reading levels. In October, Reading Centers will begin and Ms Deevy will be working in small groups with students and keeping a running record of their reading successes.
WRITING
- Our first PUBLISHING PARTY is going to happen on Tuesday. No, sorry, you cannot come. It is our first one and we are just learning how everything works. Our first publishing party will be a practice... with cookies and juice!
MATH
- The beginning of the year we familiarize students with 3 tools that we can use to solve addition equations.
* Tens Frames
* Rekenreks (Number Racks)
* Number lines
Once we become well practiced at using these tools, we will be able to refer back to them throughout the year to help us find solutions.
SOCIAL STUDIES
- We have completed our first unit in Social Studies, Responsible Citizens. We also took our first test. I will send it home next week.
