The Literacy Program in 1st Grade
The literacy program in 1st grade is threefold, covering phonics, reading, and writing.
Fundations: a research-based curriculum that allows teachers to present a methodical approach to introduce phonics, decoding, spelling, and the mechanics of writing.
Decodable Readers & Leveled Readers: at the start of the year, your child’s teacher will complete an assessment of your child’s reading skills and create an individualized plan for your child. Reading activities will include small groups, one-on-one instruction, and independent practice.
Writing Workshop: Small daily lessons along with one-on-one conferencing will support students to become creative, independent writers. Each month there will be a focus on different writing concepts (i.e., personal narrative, nonfiction, opinion, etc.). Being asked to write can be daunting for a young child. Students will be asked to write, write, write without judgment or criticism. Building our writing stamina is one of our goals for the year.
